Foodview 05. Top Catch Fish & Chippery, North Melbourne

Mr.P and the Golden Fish promotional movie poster
From the Nat Chan, the Oskar-nominated director Once a metro, comes Mr.P and the last golden fish, the story of one man's search for a gold fish.

Lame introduction to today's food review. However, true, that I have been looking for the greatest fish and chips in Melbourne. From Ascot Vale to Docklands, time and again, fish and chips shops have consistently let me down. Especially one in Port Melbourne, shame on you! Two words for you old boy... uncooked calamari!

I really want to say something like 'Alas, I have found the Lost temple of the Golden Fish arrr'. But no, instead I think I have found a f&c shop that is pretty close to the title of the greatest fish and chip shop in Melbourne.

Errol street is a nice little street to hang out and eat, great atmosphere, but I feel that the quality of food in this area is lacking . Anyways, this f&c shop is run by asians, and no, they are not members of the sinister organisation, G.O.V.R.A. I believe this shop changed hands a fews year ago. The owner is very nice and has rather large forearms. A part-time arm wrestler perhaps?

Here's the fish and calamari. Sadly their chips didn't make the grade and their tartar sauce didn't fare too well either. So I ordered two pieces of flake as well as calamari rings. Flake has always been my favourite because I like its mild flavour, nice clean and whitish texture.
Click to appreciate it in a bigger view.

Zoom in x2
Look at that batter. Every single bit of crunchy crispiness. The batter looks really light and not thick at all.

Zoom in x5
If fishes had a choice, I reckon it would pick this batter as its skin over fish scales. And all fishes should just fly in the air and already cooked, so we can just reach up and grab one and eat it.

Zoom in x10
All of the calamari rings retains their circular shape and elasticity. Most calamari rings from other f&c shops look wilted and have no character to them. I can play ring toss with these calamari.

Eventually I had to stop admiring the batter and get stuck into it.

Zoom in x2
Paris Hilton, "Oh my gosh, like how thin is that batter. It's like not even there". I must repeat myself and say the batter is top class.

Zoom in x5
The meat is not soggy or mushy. Very nicely done.

Zoom in x10
Top catch has even got the portions just right, not to long or short and not to thick or thin.

Sadly the only thing I have to say is there is the dull aftertaste, its like licking batteries. Maybe its mercury? I wonder had I only eaten one fish, would I still have this aftertaste? I suggest eating one piece of fish with some sort of accompaniment, tomato/chilli sauce, salt and vinegar, lemon juice but even then, you may experience that dull taste lingering in your mouth and could kill your eating experience. That or I probably had oral thrush that day.

Verdict :

Taste : The batter really shines in this fish but the taste brings down its overall mark to 3.75 out of 5 stars! (Considering the chips and tartar sauce as well)

Value : Very competitive pricing. 5 out of 5 stars. Just remember to only eat one piece of fish to avoid that mercuric aftertaste.

Arms still hurting as I tried bicep curls and benches. Couldnt do it. Very disappointed.

Review 0.6 Spontex Sensitive Rubber Gloves

I do an obscene amount of dish washing at home and I mean obscene. My dishes are so dirty that young children will require parental guidance to look at it. For the sake of the reader, I won't upload any pictures even though its really tempting.

So I deal with it by filling the sink with soapy water and bury the dishes under the water. However, doing this will only last about a week unless someone invents are 6-feet deep sink, that or a coffin-shaped sink and a big backyard plus shovel as well as a slave or volunteer to dig and bury my dirty dishes. I might need a plate sponsor to supply me with new dishes too. :|

Anyways, my skin hates soap. It hates it so much that it became breaks out into a song and dance (It would be interesting to have singing skin, but sadly, I get terrible rashes from soap). Until the same person who will invent that 6-feet deep sink, also invents soap-free dishwashing detergent, I have to rely on gloves.

So today's review is one that's very close to my heart, or in this case, my hands. And here I have Spontex brand latex gloves with cotton lining for sensitive people. 1 point for no more sweaty palms. What's cooler is that it comes with a free scouring sponge. Double points.

So on the back it says the usual stuff as with all latex gloves but there was this point "great tactile sensitiveness". Mmmm what the hell does that mean? Looking up Merriam-Webster.com,

Great meaning 'notably large in size'. Ah, it must be because I bought the Large size. I wonder if I had smaller hands and bought the small sized gloves would it say "Diminutive tactile sensitiveness"?

Tactile meaning 'perceptible by touch'. I perceived that there is cotton lining inside the gloves. Thanks for the reminder, Spontex.

Sensitiveness meaning 'concerned with highly classified government information or involving discretionary authority over important policy matters'. Hmmm cleverly divulging company takeovers?

First impressions
Great packaging and in three languages for all walks of life.
Simple design and the nice free sponge sticker on it really grabs consumers attentions (Guilty as charged).
There is a crude measure to determine your glove size (as with all good branded latex gloves). Nice snug fit.

Gloves feels very thin upon wearing them. This could be a good and bad thing. Good thing is hands wont sweat as much. Bad thing is might tear easily. Provides decent length to protect from soapy dish water.
Length is a full 30cm from edge to fingertip. Very good. Feels very cottony on the skin.

Test
I washed my dishes in extremely hot water. Caution: Washing dishes in hot water is not recommended. Use only as directed by a highly trained dish washing professional. Also washed a number of knives to test its durability.

Result
I like the feel of the gloves, not as thick compared to other brands yet quite durable when washing knives. Didn't feel the heat from the hot water as hand passed under the running water several times. (Note : I use less than 150 litres of water per day.). After washing so many dishes, the gloves easily come off the hand.

Conclusion
I highly recommend Spontex Sensitive rubber gloves. 5 out of 5 stars!

Foodview 04. Midori Melon Liqueur Splice

Disclaimer : Do not read this blog entry if you are below the age of 21 years old. I am strongly against drinking & driving and I strongly admonish under-aged drinking.

If you are still reading this, then slap your hand twice and all I can do is to advise you to please click on this link on drinking driving as well as this link on under-aged drinking before you read any further.

Midori isn't one of my favourite, but I do enjoy drinking it. Pretty pointless to review Midori instead I will review its offspring Midori Melon Liqueur Splice.

Whenever I think of Midori, reminds me of a japanese comic that I've read before called 'Midori Days'. Wikipedia summarises it best - "the series is about a high school boy who one day finds his right hand replaced with a girl named Midori". Brilliant.

Full points for design

Strange... it says coconut rum on the front but its says white rum on the back label. Mislead consumers much?

I don't like coconuts to be honest. I never drank coconut water or ate the meaty flesh bit inside of it. I have eaten coconut rice before, its ok but there are better rices like pandan rice. Pandan (pronounced as 'pun done') is a mystical leaf that can be found only in the jungles of Malaysia and not Singapore.

I hate this drink. The coconut flavour in this premix is overpowering, I can't taste the Midori nor the pineapple that it claims to contain and as I mentioned before not even real coconuts were used. Actually its taste is more like coconut milk rather than coconut water. It's common knowledge that coconut water is tasteless. So what's the point of drinking coconut water anyways? Might as well just drink plain water.

Coconut milk is more commonly known as Santan (pronounced 'sun ton'). Yes, I know what you are thinking and in fact you are right, Santan is the official drink of satan. I hate Santan, its one foul liquid.

I didnt finish this drink and before I become anymore angrier and start trashing my gundams, I will end with my score of this drink. I do not recommend this drink to coconut haters, but for all others, I say give it a tropical try. :)

Taste : 1 out of 5 stars
Value : depending on your aversion to coconut milk

Build 3.2 Gundam Aegis SD

TWO not one disasters in one day. I reckon that's like is the National maximum daily limit a man can tolerate. Firstly I strained the tendons of my left triceps at the gym,and here's the ironic bit, working my biceps. This means I have to lay off involving my arms for the next 1-2 weeks, so it will be strictly back and legs.

Second natural disaster is the claw bit of the Aegis broke. Devasted like this guy here.
I had to sticky tape the broken bits or it might go missing, which will further compound my devastation.

My only superglue has dried up and its harder than both mine and Mr.P's biceps combined. So unable to glue that bit tonight.

Anyways, second paint job completed. No more pink visible bits compared to my first build update.

Same for the back. Now its time to dismantle Aegis and paint him silver.

That's it for today. Need to ice my arm.

Review 0.5 Zentel tablets

Worm infestation. You think you may not have it but in fact you probably don't. I, on the other hand, have snake infestation. Who cares if you have worms or snakes, as long as you keep it in your pants and dont tell anyone about it... that's alright with me. When I saw the packaging of these tablets, it was so cute that I just had to get it. Yea... I dont think you can buy this medicine in Australia, I got it from one of those asian countries... think it was called Disneyland?

Look at that happy family... if that picture was printed on a T-shirt , I'd wear it in a heartbeat.

Anyways, not important where I got it from. The important thing is that before I proceed here is the disclaimer. 'All medications can be fatal unless taken as directed by your local registered medical practitioner'. So not wanting to die before I finished building my Gundam Astray Blue Frame MG, I sought professional medical advice from my doctor, Dr. Phil. Dr. Phil has been my family doctor ever since I was a little boy. Thuggish looking kinda doctor... I didn't think health professionals were into bodybuilding. Anyways let me repeat this again, I am not in a position to give people an individual diagnosis or medical advice. Your doctor or pharmacist is the best person to give you the individual advice you need before ingesting strange and exotic medicines.

So here went my doctor's appointment.

Jaystin : 'Good day, Dr. Phil'
Dr. Phil : 'Oh, Jaystin! What brings you to my clinic this fine Friday morning?'
Jaystin : 'I think I got snake infestation'
Dr. Phil : 'You mean worm infestation?'
Jaystin : 'and I just took this tablets that I bought from Mickey mouse, am I going to die?'

Dr. Phil takes a look at my empty box of Zentel and basically told me that I will be fine. He did make another appointment to see him in a couple weeks time to check if the medicine had worked.

So I waited patiently

Day 4
Went to my favourite pub in Melbourne, the keeper's arms to watch my favourite football team, Liverpool FC.

Day 7
Was a hot day, so I wore my poncho & sombrero to work.

Day 9
Went with Mr.P to the local 'Wear-your-tightest-shirt' competition. I beat Mr.P and wasn't even wearing my tightest shirt hahaha.

Day 11
Was a rainy day, so wore garbage bin bags to work.

Day 14
Feeling very metrosexual, wore my Paco Rabanne suit to work.

So after 14 days, I went for second doctor's appointment.

Jaystin : 'Good day, Dr. Phil'
Dr. Phil : 'Oh, Jaystin! So any snakes come out from your bum?'
Jaystin : 'No snakes came out of my bum. Wasted AUDXX.XX inc gst on those worm tablets'
Dr. Phil : 'As your disclaimer said, "seek a health professional before ingesting any medicines"'
Jaystin : 'guess this means that this review was pretty pointless'
Dr.Phil : 'That's what she said'
Jaystin : 'Indeed'

The moral of this story is that I'll never review medicines ever again... unless it has nice pictures on it.

Foodview 03a. Paldo instant noodles

Note : This review is broken into TWO parts because I managed to 'kill' my instant noodles. That's right I failed at cooking instant noodles. Sad but true.

The second part will be reviewing the taste of the noodles when I do eventually cook it right. So today I will review the contents and my failed attempt of cooking korean instant noodles called Paldo. That's right, I've never heard of this brand either because of all us have grown up on and only ever eaten one particular brand of instant noodles. Just ask any random person on the streets of Melbourne (try and go for the asian ones), and ask... actually don't even ask just say to them "Instant noodles". You will find that 9 out of 10 people will reply, "Indomie". Strange but true.

Years of eating Indomie have made my antibodies weak against its MSG content and therefore I no longer eat this legendary food. I believe that last time I cooked and ate an Indomie packet was in 1989. However, finding its replacement is not easy. There are hundreds of Instant noodles brand flooding aisles in most asian grocery stores and even in Safeway. Overwhelmed with choices? I recommend simply closing your eyes and run up and down the entire aisle whilst your hand is moving up and down and simply grab the first pack you touch. That is how Paldo came to be in my bowl. Cool but not true.

Very well presented. If I didnt close my eyes and just grabbed the first thing, I'd would have just bought this based on its packaging alone.

I believe somewhere on the back of the packet, it says "DO NOT OVERCOOK NOODLES"

This packet contains either tasteless dehydrated spring onions or green rings of death like you see on XBOXes.

This packet contains the sauce that brings it all together.

Oh yea nearly forgot about the noodles, yes without these buggers, that sauce cant bring anything together. These noodles look pretty ordinary but they are of better quality than Indomie.

So I overcooked it and even messed up poaching the egg. Looks like my sock with an orange ball in it.

The noodles was plain nasty. The presentation was zero. So here ends the review. I will return when I get a new pack and learnt to properly poached an egg like this guy here. I must aim to have the noodles to look like the packaging at the very least. Note to self : make soup more watery and noodles less transparent.

Blog 0.3 School of Ghrock Open day

Saturday night 9th January. The school of Ghrock opened its door to prospective students wanting to learn to become the next guitar heroes.

There was food
The school of ghrock does not encourage underaged drinking nor drink driving... or does it? muahahaha

In the picture below from left to right : IPKFF Current FIFA10 Australian champion, Mr. Nat "metroboy" Chan and ICCGH Current Guitar Hero Australian champion, Mr. P; Mr. Chan was invited by Mr.P to try his hand at guitar hero.
Mr. Nat Chan is holding my bottle of herbal chinese tea

Due to the school's poor promotion of its open day, no one turn up. So Mr.P invited his neighbours to the school's opening night. In the picture below from left to right : current LRM Makeup Australian champion, MAC; currently watching the street fighter match, D and current SFM Street Fighter Australian Champion, Chun Li.
Apparently Chun Li was in poor form that Mr.P fell asleep and amazingly, Mr.P managed to win their Street fighter match

Apparently D was also in poor form in Street Fighter, that when Mr.P awoke from his slumber, he took his hands off the game controller & started chatting with Mr.Chan yet he still amazingly won against D!

Unless you have been living under a rock, Street Fighter is a very popular fighting video game. As you can see from the picture below, green coloured mutants do not fight on the streets of Los Angeles but in the jungles of Thailand.
The green 'Blanca' just shot an electrical charge towards the grey 'Blanca' knocking him to the ground unconscious.

Then it was on to the FIFA10 football.
Mr.Chan proved to strong for both Mr.P and myself. So I won't waste my time talking about this. But I learnt a button that one can press to score goals from the 50 yards out, called the politically incorrect button.

Everyone having a good time, even MAC was playing guitar hero on the mobile phone.

This being an open day, there was no serious competition. However, I did have a friendly 8 song 'Pro-Faceoff' battle with Mr.P but alas I lost 3-5. For the record, Mr. P and Mr. Chan had been practicing at least an hour a day during the past 7 days on the guitar hero, and while I was busy polishing my Rock Band guitar for at least 5 minutes a day for the past 7 days. Mr.Chan while proved to be unmatched at FIFA10 didnt put up much of a fight to me and needless to say, Mr.P.

Build 3.1 Gundam Aegis SD

Ok this is not really a build, as you have seen him previously in my other posts. I am actually doing a paint job on this guy but for the sake of organising my posts, I will call this a 'build'.

I've been so into this paint job that I forgot to blogarise it :P

First things was to decide on a colour.
I asked colleagues from work for suggestions, and finally decided on the primary colour, purple with white/silver as the secondary colour.

Then I fired up the good ol' MS Paint.
Grabbed a pic of Aegis from the 1999.co.jp website. I have not bought from this site yet, I have bought an action base 1 from Hobby Link Japan but I reckon the best place to get gundam is still Walter hobby.

Then I painstakingly colour its pink bits to purple and from black to white.

Looks good on the screen and I really like this colour scheme. Sold.

So then its on to Mind games to get my paint. This store is located along Swanston street, in the city. You will have to walk all the way to the back and up the steps to buy the paint and brushes. I found that this place is currently the cheapest place to get paint and brushes. I beg you to please not buy your kits and supplies from a certain shop in the city featuring a rude asian man. He tends to throw your change at your face.

This paint is actually a brand from 'the Games Workshop'.

I took apart my aegis and have been painting the parts purple over the week.

Most of the left side is the completed side and the most of the right side of this picture are the inside of the pieces will which when put together won't see the light of day. Just thought be nice to include 'before (pink) and after (purple)' shots.

I started painting the pieces silver only on the head but haven't completed it because I realise I have not been blogging about this paint job. So let's roll...

Here is the head in silver and purple.

And artistic shot no.2. Reminds me of the helmets that the characters in Lord of the rings wore.

After this build, I will commence Gundam Freedom SD.

Gym 01

First day of gym for 2010. I intend to only journalise my gym progress. So no reviews or rants but if exercising is one of your resolution for the year, maybe, my gym entries might motivate you. A very good place I found to learn weight training techniques is online with Joe Tong, but there are tons of sites and tons of gym instructors. However, it all comes down to what exercise you are happy with. So lets roll.

Blog 0.2 Resolution

The telly was showing Lord of the rings on new year's eve that I missed welcoming the year by xx seconds. A bloody good movie too bad its xx years too late for me to review it.

Ok new year means new resolutions that I will most likely give up before February starts.

1. To make every gym session effective. Some days I will miss gym for 2-3 days and then guilt starts setting in, and I go just to make the my conscience happy but the body knows! Oh does it know me well. On these days, no matter how hard I push the weights, my body wont be sore or tired ( I define a good workout by the how my body feels after ) at the end of the workout meaning I wasted my time at the gym (when I could be at home painting my gundams). So work hard! Fight! This all depends on the next one.

2. Managing my time well. Sadly I must divide my time between gundams and gym and possibly swimming, seeing that summer is around the corner and that I also bought a new+sexy swimming trunks.
THIS is not what I bought. I am just showing what I have been using since 2000.

I love this trunks. There is even a zipped pocket! It can fit things like a passport-sized photo or a SD memory card.

3. This flows onto this third and final point which is to beat Mr.P at his own game, Guitar Hero. There is no other that is more dedicated to a particular video game title than Mr. P, He practises for at least half an hour every weeknight. No one hates losing especially me and even especially when my rival is Mr.P. So with combining resolution points 1 and 2, I will get a more buff body which will make me look extremely good in my victory pose (which pose?... I am still working on that) when I defeat Mr. P. The key is to focus and concentrate at hitting those bloody notes!

Resolutions aside. I have been busy repainting the Gundam Aegis SD (which was a Christmas pressie from Teresa). I decide to do a repaint on all my cute gundams and make them look sexy. The aim of these paintings is to prepare me for the big build that is the Master Grade Gundam Astray Blue Frame 2nd revise. My goal before I totally give up on gundams is to have at least one Master grade gundam that is so professional looking that if I ever enter one in a competition I can get at least an honourable mention ;)

Before shot. I forgot to take a pic of it before painting. Doh!

I got the paint from mindgames located along swanston st, melbourne. Purple and silver. I havent painted its bits in silver yet.

Lastly the case for mine and metroboy's nintendo dses have arrived. I plan to show detailed step by step photos to change your nintendo dsi or dslite case on your own. Every other site, I've been to is just too vague to understand and/or skip important details.

Check this out. Top is going to be metallic red, inside top: green, inside bottom: black and bottom: gold. The ultimate customised DSlite

Here is Metro's DSi. Black to a cool light blue case. OR will it be black and blue? hmmmm.

Who knows what 2010 will bring. I know that the past cant be change but my future can be changed (No more losing in bloody Guitar Hero). I will end here by wishing all a Happy New year and to make the most of it.
